Voice over IP (VoIP) enables you to make calls over the internet. The Octalarm alarm dialler uses the SIP protocol for this purpose.

Activating the supplied SIM card

To use the 24/7 monitored Adésys servers, activate the SIM card provided during onboarding. This allows you to subscribe to the service Octalarm Connect. Alternatively, you may choose a VoIP-only subscription.

Good to know: If you did not select Octalarm Connect during onboarding, you can still activate this service via Settings | Octalarm Connect or through Remote setup. See The portal: portal.octalarm.com | Remote setup (global) and Remote setup (local) for further explanation.

See Octalarm Connect for more information and instructions on how to activate this service.

When you use Octalarm Connect, the SIP server for VoIP is set to Octalarm Portal by default.

Using your own SIP server

If you do not wish to set up your own SIP server, you can skip this section.

Note: Direct Media (or Direct Routing) is not supported. To avoid issues with NAT (Network Address Translation), loss of audio, or unrecognised DTMF keys, ensure that your proprietary SIP server is always in the media path between the Octalarm alarm dialler and the telephone number to be called.

Good to know: Requirements for your own VoIP server:

  • The VoIP server must be in the media path.
  • The VoIP server must ignore the IP addresses of the Octalarm alarm dialler specified in the SIP protocol. In Asterisk, for example, enable both ‘rtp_symmetric’ and ‘rewrite_contact’.
  • The Octalarm alarm dialler must have a direct outside line from the VoIP server. Supply numbers in GSM format, for example +31174794022.
  • The VoIP server must support the codecs PCMA/8000 (a-Law) and PCMU/8000 (u-Law).
  • DTMF tones must be received as RFC2833 RTP events or SIP INFO packets; in-band DTMF is not supported.
  • The VoIP server must be in the same subnet as the Octalarm alarm dialler, unless the VoIP server is publicly accessible from the internet.
  • For Touch Pro or ARA, the VoIP server may also be accessible via a static route.
  • Go to Settings and scroll to Interfaces.
  • Select VoIP.
  • Click Edit and complete the fields below.
  • Click Save.
